PUNE: A 44-year-old resident of Pimple Saudagar fell victim to cybercrooks, losing a staggering Rs1.1 crore between July and November last year in an online task fraud.

Inspector Sunil Tambe of the Sangvi police department revealed to TOI, “The victim, employed with a Mumbai-based software company, resorted to taking loans and borrowing money from friends, which he then transferred to the crooks, hoping to recover his entire investment. However, he ended up losing it all.”

The ordeal began in July last year when the techie received a message on a phone app, offering a part-time job involving online tasks for earning money. “Upon responding, he was directed to register via a website,” Tambe explained.

Initially, after completing some tasks and receiving a small sum of money, he was instructed to make a ‘recharge’, following which he received additional funds, according to the police.

In multiple transactions, totaling Rs16.45 lakh, he transferred money to the fraudsters. However, when he attempted to withdraw his funds, he encountered difficulties. The scammers alleged that he had exceeded the Rs15 lakh limit and, per the company’s protocol, needed to transfer 50 percent of the sum to recover his entire investment.

The fraudsters continually demanded more money, citing various reasons such as credit rating issues, income tax obligations, and legal fees. “Ultimately, he lodged a complaint with the cybercrime cell of the Pimpri Chinchwad police in December. A case was officially registered on Wednesday,” Tambe concluded.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with online transactions and the importance of exercising caution when engaging in online activities.
