New Delhi : The National Consumer Helpline (NCH) has refunded Rs 1 crore in coaching admission fees to students and aspirants of various competitive exams, including those seeking admission to the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), civil services and Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs).
Intervention following student complaint
The government on Sunday said the refund process was completed without any litigation following the intervention of the consumer affairs ministry following complaints from students who had joined coaching centres for various competitive exams in the country. “This action reaffirms our commitment to ensure that coaching institutes follow fair practices and respect consumer rights,” Consumer Affairs Secretary Nidhi Khare said.

NCH started the campaign
After receiving numerous complaints about unfair practices by coaching centres, especially refusal to refund enrolment fees, NCH launched a drive to resolve these complaints expeditiously, an official statement said. NCH received 16,276 complaints from students in 2023-24, while the figure was 5,351 in 2022-2023 and 4,815 in 2021-2022.
Bangalore student gets Rs 3.5 lakh
The complaints included unfulfilled promises, inadequate teaching quality and abrupt cancellation of courses. The ministry cited some success stories. These include a Bengaluru student who got a refund of Rs 3.5 lakh and a Gujarat student who got a refund of Rs 8.36 lakh after NCH's intervention.
