During the Super Four India vs Pakistan match against Pakistan at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, Virat Kohli and KL Rahul made history by establishing a new partnership record in the Asia Cup. This dynamic duo managed to accumulate an impressive total of 233 runs, breaking the previous record set in 2012 by Mohammad Hafeez and Nasir Jamshed.
Hafeez and Jamshed had achieved a partnership of 224 runs for the opening wicket when facing India in the 2012 edition of the Asia Cup held in Bangladesh.
Kohli and Rahul’s outstanding performance marked the ninth instance of a partnership exceeding 200 runs in Asia Cup ODIs. They also surpassed the highest partnership record for an Indian pair in the Asia Cup, eclipsing Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane’s 213 against Bangladesh in Fatullah.
Notably, when Kohli and Rahul surpassed the 224-run milestone, they also established the highest partnership record for the third wicket in the history of the Asia Cup.
Taking the crease after India lost Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill with the score at 123/2, Kohli and Rahul propelled India to a formidable total of 356/2, marking the Men in Blue’s highest score against Pakistan in ODIs.
During this India vs Pakistan match, Kohli made history by surpassing Sachin Tendulkar’s record as the fastest player to reach 13,000 runs in ODIs. He also notched his 47th ODI century, coming within two centuries of Tendulkar’s remarkable tally of 49.
Kohli continued to score briskly, finishing his innings with 122 runs off 94 balls, featuring nine fours and three sixes. Meanwhile, Rahul, making his comeback after an injury, remained unbeaten with an outstanding score of 111 runs off 106 balls, including 12 fours and two sixes.
