New Delhi : Ajit Doval has once again been appointed as the National Security Advisor. Doval has been given this responsibility for the third consecutive time. Since the swearing-in of the Modi government, there were speculations whether Doval would get this important responsibility again or someone else would come to this post. However, Modi has once again expressed confidence in his old trump card. After coming to power in 2014, PM Modi appointed Doval as the National Security Advisor for the first time. In 2019, he was once again appointed to this post for five years.

Why did Prime Minister Modi express confidence?

Doval has done many important works during the tenure of the Modi government in the last decade. In 2014, Ajit Doval ensured the release of 46 Indian nurses trapped in a hospital in Tikrit, Iraq. He went on a top secret mission and went to Iraq on 25 June 2014 to understand the ground situation. The nurses were brought back to India on 5 July 2014. The surgical strike carried out by India in September 2016 and the Balakot airstrike across the border in Pakistan in February 2019 were carried out under the supervision of Doval. He also helped in ending the Doklam standoff. Apart from this, decisive steps were taken to deal with insurgency in the Northeast. What is the National Security Advisor?

The National Security Advisor is a senior official of the National Security Council (NSC) of India. He serves as the chief advisor to the Prime Minister of India on national security policy and strategic matters. They work at the discretion of the Prime Minister of India. The National Security Advisor (NSA) is tasked with advising the Prime Minister on a regular basis on all matters relating to India's internal and external threats and opportunities. The NSA's work portfolio includes overseeing strategic and sensitive issues on behalf of the Prime Minister. The National Security Advisor of India also serves as the Prime Minister's special interlocutor with China and envoy to Pakistan and Israel on security matters. The Government of India created the NSA in 2019 as well as gave cabinet rank to NSA Ajit Doval.

This post was established in India in 1998. Since then all the NSAs appointed are from the Indian Foreign Service or the Indian Police Service. Brajesh Mishra was the first National Security Advisor during the tenure of Atal Bihari Vajpayee. He remained in this post till 22 May 2004. After this, during the tenure of Manmohan Singh government, this responsibility was given to IFS officer JN Dixit. After this, IPS MK Narayanan took charge of this post from 3 January 2005 to 23 January 2010. After him, IFS Shivshankar Menon was the National Security Advisor from 24 January 2010 to 28 May 2014. After Modi became the Prime Minister in the year 2014, Ajit Doval was appointed to this post.
