Salil Ankola used to play domestic cricket for Maharashtra. He made his Test debut against Pakistan on 15 November 1989. Sachin Tendulkar also made his debut in the same match. Salil took 1 wicket in the first innings against Pakistan. He got only one wicket in the second innings as well. After this, he got a chance to play in ODIs in the same year. Salil represented Team India in the 1996 World Cup. Salil Ankola had a tumor in his left calf, due to which he retired from cricket in 1997 at the age of 29.

Salil was fond of acting for a long time. After retirement, he turned to Bollywood. Soon he entered the film world. Salil made his debut in Sanjay Dutt's film Kurukshetra in the year 2000. In this film, he played the role of Sub Inspector Avinash. After this, he got a chance to work in many films. Salil also worked in films like Chura Liya Hai Tumne, Riwayat, Ekta, The Power.

Divorce happened due to alcohol addiction
After some time, his family faced financial crisis. He also got addicted to alcohol. Due to this, he got divorced from his wife Parineeta Ankola. After this, he married Riya Banerjee. However, after some time, Salil started getting offers from TV serials. After films, he started doing roles in TV serials. He worked in serials like CID, Vikar of Gabral.
