According to the IANS report, on the evening of January 21, 2000, Rakesh Roshan was attacked by two unknown assailants outside his office at Tilak Road, Santacruz West, Mumbai. He was shot in his left hand and two bullets grazed his chest. The assailants fled from the spot immediately. Later, Hrithik told about this incident in a conversation with BBC. He said, 'I was training in the gym at that time and he (Rakesh Roshan) called me and asked – where are you? He looked very scared. He forbade me to go anywhere and then he told me that he has been shot. I don't know why this happened, two people came and fired bullets at me and now I am going to the police.'

'Rakesh Roshan fainted as soon as he reached the hospital after being shot'

Hrithik further said, 'I thought he should go to the hospital, but he was so angry that he didn't want to let them go, so he went to the police station and then they took him to the hospital and he collapsed there. The bullet got stuck near the sternum, touching the wall of his heart.'

'I had not even started celebrating my success when my father got shot'

The actor said, 'I had not even started enjoying the success of my film when all this happened. I was about to tell the trade papers that Kaho Naa Pyar Hai has become a hit and Friday came, I was about to party, but before that Papa got shot. He was shot in the chest and one hand, I remember he called me because he was worried whether I was okay or not. This thought must have come to his mind whether the whole family has been targeted.'
