Arvind Kejriwal wants to have an additional meeting with lawyers, Delhi High Court to hear CM's plea

New Delhi : The Delhi High Court will hear on Monday the petition of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, arrested in the excise scam case, in which he has sought additional meetings with his lawyers. The petition is listed for hearing before Justice Neena Bansal Krishna. Kejriwal has challenged the lower court's July 1 order, which rejected his plea to direct the jail authorities to allow him two additional meetings a week with his lawyers through video conference.

Permission to meet lawyers twice

At present, Kejriwal is allowed to meet his lawyers twice a week. In the petition filed in the lower court, Kejriwal said that he is facing about 30 cases across the country. In such a situation, on the basis of the right to a fair hearing, he needs two additional meetings with his lawyers through video conference to discuss these cases. Dismissing the petition, the court said that the petitioner's lawyer has failed to explain how he is entitled to two additional meetings through video conference on the same basis. These were discussed and settled in the earlier order.

CM has challenged the arrest

In separate petitions, Kejriwal has challenged his arrest in a corruption case registered by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with the alleged excise policy scam and has also sought bail. Both the petitions are pending in the high court. Kejriwal, the national convener of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), was arrested by the CBI on June 26 from Tihar jail, where he is still lodged in judicial custody in a money laundering case registered by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).

Kejriwal was arrested on March 21

Kejriwal was arrested by the ED on March 21. He got bail from the trial court on June 20 in the money laundering case. However, the High Court stayed the trial court order. The policy was scrapped in 2022 after the Delhi Lieutenant Governor ordered a CBI probe into alleged irregularities and corruption in the formulation and implementation of the excise policy. According to the CBI and ED, irregularities were committed while amending the excise policy and undue benefits were given to license holders.
