Central Railway (CR) has started the expansion project of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus in Mumbai. The project will begin on Friday night, April 19, and will aim to extend the platforms used for long-distance trains to accommodate 24-car trains.
Extension of platforms 10, 11, 12, 13 and 14
CSMT station has 18 platforms. Platforms 8 to 18 handle long distance trains, while platforms 1 to 7 handle suburban services. However, only a few of the 11 long-distance platforms can currently handle trains with 24 coaches. The project aims to expand platforms 10, 11, 12, 13 and 14 to accommodate trains of up to 24 carriages.

The length of the platform will be increased from 305 to 382 meters. The project also includes construction of essential service buildings and yard remodeling. Once completed, these platforms will significantly enhance CSMT's ability to manage longer trains. The project also includes removal of nine old dry pit lines used for train washing, 61 old OHE masts and 71 telecommunication barriers.
The project will also impact commuters during construction. There will be a block of 24 to 30 hours. This will result in many local and long distance trains being canceled between midnight and 4.30 am. About thirty services on the main and harbor lines and six long distance trains will terminate at Dadar.
Central Railway has planned to work in four-hour blocks over two nights on April 19-20 and April 20-21. Work will start at 12.30 am on both days and will end at 4.30 am. During this period, train movement will not be allowed on the railway tracks on slow and fast lines between Byculla and Wadala-CSMT sections. This will affect CSMT-Wadi Bunder Marg, Main and Harbor lines, 7th line and Shunting Neck.
