New Delhi : This year's southwest monsoon officially ended on Monday. This information was given by India Meteorological Department (IMD). The Meteorological Department said that during this period, 934.8 mm rainfall was recorded in India, which is 108 percent of the long-term average and the highest rainfall since 2020.

Where did it rain so much?

According to the IMD, central India received 19 per cent more rainfall than the region's long-term average, the southern peninsula received 14 per cent more than normal rainfall and northwest India received seven per cent more than normal rainfall. According to the data, 14 percent less rainfall than normal was recorded in Eastern and North-Eastern India.

11 percent less rain in June

The country received 11 percent less rainfall in June, but nine percent more rainfall in July. After this, there was 15.7 percent more rainfall in August and 10.6 percent more rainfall in September. India recorded 820 mm rainfall in the 2023 monsoon season, which was 94.4 percent of the long-term average. The country recorded 925 mm rainfall in 2022, which was 106 percent of the long-term average. There was 870 mm rainfall in the year 2021 and 958 mm rainfall in 2020.

More rain than normal was expected

The IMD had predicted above normal rainfall (106 per cent of the long-term average) during the monsoon this year. It has also accurately predicted below normal monsoon rainfall for Northeast India, normal rainfall for Northwest and above normal rainfall for central and southern peninsular regions. Monsoon is important for India's agricultural sector, as 52 percent of the total cultivable area depends on it.
