Emergency release: Censor board's clear statement in HC – certificate will be given only if there are cuts, Kangana also adamant

The release of Kangana Ranaut's film 'Emergency' is likely to be delayed further. The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) on Thursday told the Bombay High Court that it has no objection to the release of the film, but the makers will have to make some cuts in it. Interestingly, this response of the censor board has come to the court after Kangana had recently clearly stated in an interview that she will not make any cuts in any part of her film based on former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The actress even said that she has resolved that she will release 'Emergency' the way she has made it. Last week, a bench of Justices BP Colabawala and Firdaus Pooniwala had slammed the censor board and sought a response on the release of 'Emergency'. The court had said that the board should make up its mind and tell what its stand is on issuing a certificate to the film. The bench asked the censor board whether the CBFC cannot remain neutral and needs to take a decision

The censor board said that some cuts will be made, only then the film will be released

The High Court had asked the Censor Board to take a decision on the release of the film by September 25. In such a situation, on Thursday, the bench asked the board what decision it has taken. CBFC lawyer Abhinav Chandrachud told the court, 'The committee has suggested issuing a certificate to the film and making some cuts before releasing the film.'

Producer's lawyer asked for time, next hearing on September 30

During the hearing on Thursday, senior advocate Sharan Jagtiani, appearing for the film's co-producer Zee Studio, sought time from the court. He said that we need some time to decide whether cuts can be made in our film or not. After this, the court fixed September 30 as the date for the next hearing.

'Emergency' was to release on 6 September

Kangana Ranaut's 'Emergency' was scheduled to release on September 6. In this, she is playing the role of the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. It was postponed due to not getting a certificate from the censor board. In the last hearing, the producers of the film had accused the censor board of deliberately obstructing the release of the film.

Sikh organizations held the 'Emergency' responsible

It is noteworthy that some Sikh organizations including Shiromani Akali Dal had objected to the release of 'Emergency'. It was alleged that this film is misrepresenting the Sikh community and historical facts have been tampered with. Interestingly, Kangana Ranaut is not only the lead actress of this film, but is also its director and co-producer. She is also an MP of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party at the Center.
