Kolkata rape-murder case: If there is no protest at the cost of duty then… Supreme Court's ultimatum to striking doctors

New Delhi: On Monday, the Supreme Court said regarding the doctors' strike that protests cannot be done at the cost of duty. The court was hearing the case of rape and murder of a female doctor in Kolkata's RG Kar Hospital. The Supreme Court also expressed concern over the 14-hour delay in registering a case by the Kolkata Police in this matter. The court said that the doctors who went on strike should return to work by Tuesday evening. No action will be taken against the doctors who return to work. The court said, 'If you (striking doctors) do not return to work, then no one can be held responsible for the disciplinary action taken against you. Protests cannot be done by leaving duty.' The court questioned where is the document of the time when the body was handed over for postmortem? There is no mention of the challan. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the CBI, said that the challan is not part of their records. Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for the West Bengal government, told the court that he could not get the documents immediately and he would tell the court about it later. On this, CBI and West Bengal government were asked to file reply.
